Best International Young Inventor Award at KIDE, Taiwan – Lahiru Kavinda

J.M. Lahiru Kavinda, an acclaimed Sri Lankan innovator, was honored with the Best International Young Inventor Award at the Kaohsiung International Design Expo (KIDE), held in December 2017 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Organized by the World Invention Intellectual Property Association (WIIPA), the event brought together innovative minds from around the globe, showcasing groundbreaking inventions.

Lahiru’s award-winning invention utilized organic waste materials to create an eco-friendly alternative to plywood. This novel building material is not only more durable, weather-resistant, and pest-resistant than conventional plywood but is also highly suitable for outdoor applications. The product meets the strength requirements of plywood while offering a lighter density, making it easier to handle and transport.

What sets this invention apart is its carbon-negative footprint. Unlike traditional materials that release carbon dioxide during production or disposal, Lahiru’s invention traps carbon within the material. By repurposing organic waste—materials that would otherwise release carbon into the atmosphere through decomposition or combustion—his innovation ensures long-term carbon sequestration. Moreover, the material is recyclable, adding to its environmental sustainability.

This groundbreaking invention demonstrates a powerful synergy between innovation, sustainability, and practicality. Lahiru Kavinda’s achievement at KIDE underscores his dedication to addressing global challenges through creative and impactful solutions.
